Luiz Henrique Coletto

With over a decade of English teaching experience and additional years teaching Portuguese, Writing skills, and Communication since 2008, I’ve had the privilege of working with students from all walks of life, from 4-year-olds to octogenarians. Currently a Ph.D. candidate at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), I hold an M.A. in Communication and Culture from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ, 2013). My academic journey has taken me across the globe, presenting research at conferences in Australia, Ecuador, Germany, Greece, Portugal, and the United States, including fieldwork for my Master’s thesis at a nonprofit in Los Angeles, California. Due to my own academic career and consistent demand among my private students, I have focused significantly on academic English, also known as English for Academic Purposes (EAP).
While my career began at an English school, I’ve primarily focused on private tutoring, working with over 70 learners in the past ten years. My students’ goals have ranged from travel preparation and exam success to academic advancement and career development. I’ve developed particular expertise serving three main groups: Master’s and doctoral students preparing for international study or conference presentations; early-career scholars pursuing postdoctoral/research positions; and professors at various career stages needing to present at conferences or publish in English. Today, my current and former students are spread across Brazil, Colombia, Germany, Portugal, the UK, and the US.
My teaching expertise encompasses comprehensive EAP instruction, particularly for professors and researchers pursuing international opportunities. I specialize in advanced conversation lessons focusing on contemporary and debate-worthy topics, as well as test preparation, especially for TOEFL iBT, TOEFL ITP, the Duolingo English Test (DET) and various Brazilian institutional exams. I also provide Business English instruction for professionals advancing in global corporate environments, along with General English instruction primarily focusing on American English, though some students specialize in British or Australian variants.
I have written about English teaching experiences, learning challenges, and language research, which you can find by clicking the icons below.
